You wake up on the edge of the Zone with no memory of what's happened to you, only your PDA with the mission "Kill Strelok" gives you a clue to who you are. You're a Stalker, a mercenary treasure hunter looking for riches in the Zone. But there are a lot of people out there who want the same thing, will you be able to survive?
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. possibly one of the most revolutionary FPS games ever. You'll enter a living world which you're free to explore however you want, whether working through the story missions to track down and kill the mysterious Strelok, picking up missions from NPCs or exploring the Zone for Artifacts, scientific curiosities worth a lot of money thanks to their special qualities. There are factions to join and battles to fight as well as mutants and other strange things that go bump in the irradiated night.
An atmosphere like no other will see you fight your way through dilapidated laboratories, wild forests and the abandoned shell that is the city of Pripyat up to the sarcophagus of Reactor 4 and the secrets of the zone. You'll really feel this atmosphere through the excellent graphics and oppressive environment as well as the reactions of the characters around you, not forgetting the realistic weather changes.
You can expect to find a host of weapons littered around the zone, though you will have to pry them from some dead fingers. The shooting is definitely of the tactical persuasion. Taking time to plan your attack (whether alone or accompanied by your faction mates) and keeping an eye out at all times will help. In fact you could compare S.T.A.L.K.E.R. to that other king of FPS, Far Cry, as the difficulty towards the end really goes up, separating the men from the mutant boys.
But what would be an excellent single player game without some decent multi? Well S.T.A.L.K.E.R. lives up to that too. Though it has the standard deathmatch and Team Deathmatch, you'll find yourself playing the far superior Artifact Hunt mode (watch the tutorial video) , where two teams fight it out to take an Artifact back to their base making more cash to buy better weapons.
