What Metaboli thinks

PC game Warhammer 40K - Dawn of War Anthology
Dawn of War, it was possibly the best in squad based real-time strategy, but it had one fault: the campaign was too short. Then along came it's first expansion pack: Winter Assault which added the Imperial Guards and a real campaign with all the races, and now comes Dark Crusade and two new races: the Necrons and the T'au Empire and a full on single player campaign where you can choose to play as any of the seven races and conquer the planet Kronus.
This download of the Anthology includes all the three games (though really Dark Crusade is where all the action is) and access to all the races in the outstandingly well balanced multiplayer game mode.
For those of you familiar with the squad based, point capturing strategic gameplay of Dawn of War the original four races in the game: the Space Marines, the Chaos, the Eldar and the Orks have each got two new units, plus there's the addition of the Imperial Guard (new in Winter Assault); human conscripts from the galactic empire who's main strength is there defences and their super-long range Basilisk artillery. And there's the two races new to Dark Crusade: the Necrons; like undead terminator-like machines - they're slow and costly but man, to they hurt; and the T'au Empire; expensive but with some excellent specialised units including Fire Warriors and Missile Gunships. Each perfectly balanced; so there is no race that you can take for a sure win.
In the Dark Crusade campaign game you'll be tasked with conquering the planet Kronus via a turn based Risk-like map over a series of one on one battles. Scattered over the planet are a number of power-ups like the Eres Badlands which allows your army to move twice per turn. Also by winning battles you can earn horror guard units and power-ups for your commander turning him into a gigantic powerhouse unit. Featuring traditional annihilation battles and more specific task based missions, it's the truly complete campaign game that Dawn of War needed.
Graphically the Anthology looks as great as the original Dawn of War; excellent textures, great explosions and special character on character animations that make you want to zoom into the battlefield at every skirmish.
And how could we talk about Dawn of War without mentioning its excellent multiplayer game. With hosts of maps and balanced game-play Dawn of War in Multiplayer (especially in Dark Crusade) is something that you just can't ignore.
